Mustang wrestlers take on Trojans

OSAWATOMIE — Iola High’s Mustangs hadn’t wrestled for more than a week and a half. They were in a dual meet with host Osawatomie High’s Trojans Thursday.
The Trojans won the dual 44-24. The Mustangs won four matches, all by pins.
Freshman Joe Myrick pinned Kyle Kjar at 140 pounds followed by sophomore Devin Culler winning by a fall over Matt Lofing in the 152-pound match
Junior Marcus Sullivan pinned David Higgins for an Iola win at 160. Chris Lynn, a junior, pinned Braxton Taylor in the 285-pound match.
Freshman Stephen McDonald went up against Kansas Class 4A top-ranked Zack Grimes of Osawatomie in the 189-pound class. Grimes defeated McDonald 16-4.
Iola sophomore Brent Clark lost 6-0 to Andrew Cannon at 130. Osawatomie’s Devon Dozier pinned Iola junior Lee Berg in the 135-pound class. Junior Drew Shepherd lost by a fall to Osawatomie’s Tyler Daniels at 171.
In junior varsity matches, Osawatomie’s Jacob Blurton pinned Iola’s Justin Baker at 152; David Higgins pinned Iola’s Chase Roettgen at 160; Iola’s Denton Christian beat Tyler Daniels 6-3 at 171; Iola’s Jason Tidd pinned Dylan Stewart at 130; Iola’s Kody Mullins pinned Jacob Blurton at 152; Iola’s Zack Vaughn pinned Matt Lofing at 152; and Iola’s Zach Crawford pinned David Higgins at 160.
With the cancellation of last Saturday’s varsity tournament at Fredonia and junior varsity tournament at Fort Scott, the Mustangs will compete in Saturday’s Silver Lake High’s tournament.
The Mustangs jump back into Southeast Kansas League competition with a make-up double dual at Pittsburg with Fort Scott Tuesday.
Then on Thursday, Iola hosts its first SEK double dual with Coffeyville and Independence. Wrestling begins at 5:30 p.m.
