Allen Community College mens and womens basketball traveled west to Garden City over the weekend and came away with two very different outcomes.
The Red Devil men continued their dominant run, beating the Broncbusters 80-61 which moved their overall record to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The win is their seventh straight.
Meanwhile, the Lady Devils continue to struggle, falling 82-60. The loss was their eighth straight. Their record falls to 2-9 and 0-2.
The Allen men struggled early in the win and Garden City managed to keep it a fairly low scoring affair until freshman Trez Hankins hit three threes near the 13-minute mark to boost the Red Devil lead to as much as 12.
The Busters closed out the half on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 33-25.
The second half was a much different tale. The Red Devils continued their strong defensive effort while dominating the taller Garden City players on the boards.
Allen County ended the night with 57 total rebounds including 19 offensive boards compared to just 34 total for Garden City.
Midway through the second half, the Red Devils pushed their lead over 20 points, all the way to 25, which was the largest lead of the night.
The Broncbusters made some mini-runs down the homestretch to get back within 20 but nothing that seriously threatened the Red Devils dominance.
Garden City ended the night shooting 33.3 percent, which was the lowest output the Red Devils have allowed all season.
Sophomore Darius Love had another big game with 20 points and nine rebounds followed by a 17 point and 17 rebound double-double for freshman Malik Hardmon. Hankins had 14 points and Wesley Anderson Jr. had 10 points.
THE LADY DEVILS only trailed by three, 29-26, heading into halftime but a third-quarter scoring drought pushed that deficit to nine heading into the fourth quarter.
Allen had success attacking the rim but came up short multiple times when they were sent to the freethrow line. Back-to-back Lady Broncbuster threes put the game out of reach and saddled the Lady Devils with another loss.
Freshman Ariel Walker had 19 points, freshman Tunmi Amusa nearly had a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds, sophomore ChrisAlee Patterson had 11 points and sophomore Alecia Verge scored 10.
Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Seward County. The women will play at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m.
