KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Leaving 19 runners on base in two seven-inning games cost Allen County Community College’s Red Devils over the weekend. Maplewoods Community College scored winning runs late in both games to sweep the Red Devils.
Maplewoods avenged a doubleheader sweep by Allen County to open the season. Allen County lost 5-3 and 6-5 on Saturday and is now 5-5 on the season.
Allen County is at Labette Community College in Parsons today for a Jayhawk Eastern Division doubleheader. The Red Devils are 2-0 in conference play.
The Red Devils led 3-1 after four innings of Saturday’s first game. They scored a run in the first inning when Kassie Summers scored on a passed ball after reaching on an error.
In the fourth inning, with one gone, Lenzie Boring doubled, Kelci Owens reached on a fielder’s choice and Boring scored on a passes ball. Owens had moved to third, then Megan Dillow singled. Owens scored on an error.
In the bottom of the fourth, Maplewoods scored its run after two were out on an error and two singles. Maplewoods took the lead when it scored four runs on four hits and an ACCC error in the fifth.
Allen County left 10 runners on base in the game. Boring had a single and a double and Dillow had two singles. Hitting a single each were Brandie Hutcheson, Autumn Lamle and Jenna Sigg.
Boring took the pitching loss. She allowed eight hits, walked two and struck out six.
The second game was almost the same pattern. Allen County left nine runners on base and lost by one run.
Maplewoods scored twice in the first inning on three hits.
Allen County produced a run in the second. With two outs, Callie Umholtz reached on an error and moved to second on a throw. Kylie Taylor drove in the run with a base hit.
The Red Devils tied the game when Sigg singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Taylor in the sixth.
Maplewood got a run on two hits in the bottom of the sixth to lead 3-2.
Back came the Red Devils in the seventh. Owens singled and moved to third on an error allowing Dillow to reach safe. Dillow stole second base.
With one gone, Hutcheson drew a walk to load the bases. Lamle doubled to drive in three runs putting ACCC up 5-3.
Unfortunately, the ACCC defense could not close the door. It had two errors after two were out allowing Maplewoods to score three runs on a single and a double to win 6-5.
