HUMBOLDT — It would have been easy for Humboldt High’s girls to go through the motions of a lop-sided loss Friday.
Down 39-5 at the break, the Lady Cubs knew breaking visiting Cherryvale High’s press had been exceedingly difficult.
“We got frustrated,” head coach Jeff Wilkerson said. “We committed way too many turnovers.”
But the Lady Cubs put together one of their best quarters of the season, outscoring the Charger girls 10-9 in the period. The scoring outburst wasn’t enough to make a dent in Cherryvale’s lead. The Chargers wound up winning 52-18.
“I thought the second half showed their character,” Wilkerson said. “They played better.”
Cherryvale led 18-4 after one period, and then outscored the Lady Cubs 21-1 in the second period.
“We got steals on three straight possessions in the third quarter that helped our offense,” Wilkerson said.
Kindahl Young’s six points led the Lady Cubs, followed by Sheri Middleton with five. Michaela Bartlett had five rebounds and two steals. Young and Kristin Todd both had two assists. Middleton registered a pair of blocks.
Andrea Hucke scored 12 of her game-high 14 points for Cherryvale in the first half. Katelynn Main added 10.
Humboldt (1-7) travels to the Blu-Jay Mid-Season Tournament Tuesday in Pleasanton. The Lady Cub will take on Prairie View at 4 p.m.
