WICHITA — Two out of three isn’t bad. Yates Center High’s Dylan Sicka was qualified for the 2010 Kansas Class 1A 3200-meter, 1600-meter and 800-meter runs. He earned medals in two of the races over the weekend in Wichita.
Fellow Yates Center senior Donnie Bennett captured a fifth-place medal in the Class 1A 300-meter intermediate hurdles. Bennett ran the race in 41.66 seconds.
Sicka ran the 3200-meter race Friday evening. He posted a personal-best time of 10 minutes, 20.17 seconds to win the fifth-place medal.
Under the heat of Saturday afternoon, Sicka didn’t medal in the 1600. He ran it in 4:43.67.
Then it cooled off a bit and he ran another personal-best time in the 800. He had a strong finish to take third place in 2:01.91.
Brae Adams, a junior, won her second state medal. This time it was a third-place one in Class 1A discus with a throw of 117 feet, 1 inch.
Bennett did not make the finals of the long jump. He finished eighth with a leap of 20’1/2”. Cherokee Shaffer was 15th in the high jump at 4’8”.
Southern Coffey County High’s Colin Kraft claimed the seventh-place medal in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.68 seconds. The junior did not qualify for the finals of the 300 hurdles with a preliminary time of 42.34 seconds.
The SCCH girls and boys were shut out of the finals in the 4×100 relays. Jenna Witteman and Trevor Smith did not make the finals of the 200-meter dashes. And the 4×400-meter girls’ relay was not able to make the finals.
Aaron Ludolph was 12th in the 1A boys’ high jump at 5’10”. Shelby Birk took 10th in the long jump at 15’6 1/2”
On Saturday morning, Witteman and Smith did not move on in the 100-meter dash preliminaries. Kraft was 13th in the triple jump with a leap of 39’1 3/4”.
Crest High’s Kurston Gilliland placed 10th in the girls’ shot put with a throw of 33’4”. Amanda Strickler was eighth in the javelin with a toss of 109’11” and Shayla Stephens was 11th at 106’7”.
Crest’s 4×800-meter relay team of David Womelsdorf, Chris Brallier, Dustin Davis-Jones and Trevor Holman finished 14th Saturday. They ran the race in 9:05.99.
