LYNDON — Yates Center High’s track and field teams opened the 2014 season in strong fashion Thursday. ON THE GIRLS’ side, Katelyn Hatch took second in the 100-meter high hurdles at 19.6 seconds. Mindi Holloway was second in the 800 at 2:44. Makayla Jones took third in the shot put at 30’5 1/2” inches.
Both the Wildcat boys and girls took third in their respective divisions, head coach Dan Berg said.
“It was a great day for both teams,” he said. “The boys missed second by four points. We had a good effort by everyone we took.”
Among the highlights:
Kal Hamm took home first place in both the 110-meter high hurdles at 16.4 seconds and in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles at 47.5 seconds. He completed his gold medal hat trick by clearing the high jump at 6 feet, 6 inches.
Drake Busteed won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 13 seconds, while Yates Center’s 4×400 relay team of Mikey Bruner, Myles Dice, Caleb DeNoon and Busteed teamed to win with a time of 3:48.
Brett Holloway took second in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:46 and third in the 1600 meters at 5:15. Yates Center’s 4×800 relay team of Holloway, Busteed, Hayden Splechter and Bruner finished second at 9:05.
Austin McNett was third in the javelin at 141’ 1/4”.
The 4×100 relay team of Rylie Albert, Hatch, Ashley Pringle and Holloway teamed to take second at 56.1 seconds.
“I’m proud of the efforts in the girls division,” Berg said. “We have to keep working. We are excited to see improvement as we go to future meets.”
