Mark Percy is still set to be a recipient of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame “Pride of Kansas” Award.
The Iola High head baseball coach was entering his final year at the helm this season, and was set to receive the award at a game this spring. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the canceled season, those plans have been rescheduled for a later date.
Percy has been a football, baseball, and basketball coach for the last 39 years at the middle school, high school, and college level. In football, Percy is a defensive-minded specialist, and has coached at Washburn University, Ottawa University, University of Minnesota, Hutchinson Community College, Shawnee Mission East, and Iola Middle and High School.
In baseball, Percy spent time as an assistant at Allen Community College, Shawnee Mission High School and Ottawa University. He started the IHS Mustangs baseball program in 2005, and 13 years later coached the Mustangs to the 4A-II Kansas State Baseball Championship while earning Sports in Kansas 4A coach of the year award.
Percy was anticipating to pick up his 200th win this season, an achievement he will never see after announcing his plans to retire as the Mustangs head baseball coach.

Percy’s son, Matthew Glenn Percy, is a senior majoring in business at Park University where he attends on a gold scholarship. He took first place as an individual at the 2020 Ottawa University Spring Invitational Golf Tournament at Eagle Bend Golf Course in Lawrence before spring break back in March. Matthew’s team was also crowned first place in the event. The golf season came to an abrupt ending for Matthew due to the spread of COVID-19.
He is currently finishing the rest of his college classes from home in Ottawa since the campus has been closed for the rest of the school year.
