Poet Laureate coming to Iola Public Library

The idea of home will be explored in poetry at Iola Public Library on Friday. Kansas Poet Laureate Wyatt Townley will be coming for the first time to Iola to read poems and discuss themes for a bring-your-own-brown-bag-lunch event.

“What is home, where is home, and how does it intersect with poetry?” Townley said. “I’m doing not only my poetry, but other Kansans’ and other greats, many of whom I’ve memorized.”

Library Director Roger Carswell said that, for him, “home” is a place to be comfortable and share memories, which is something that both Iola and the library does for him.

“I think Iola is a good comfortable place to call home. I’ve been here for 22 years and it felt like home from the beginning,” he said.

While poetry is not often as popular as other forms of mainstream writing, it allows “deeper literacy,” Townley said, that speaks to the soul.

“I’m looking to connect with folks, word by word, breath by breath, poem by poem,” she said.

Carswell said if the event goes well, it could open the door for future events that focus on poetry.

The program begins at noon Friday. For more information contact the library at 620-365-3262.

Seahorses swim past Humboldt Wednesday

The Iola Seahorses competed against Humboldt Wednesday night at Riverside Park. Iola swimmers came in first place 42 times during the individual races. The team won eight of 12 relay races.

“They swam really, really well,” said coach Ciara Klubek. “I’m impressed with a lot of time improvements. Some kids had a little bit of trouble, but they swam their best and that’s all I can expect from them.”

For the season, Klubek has noticed an increase in confidence.

“I’m really impressed with a lot of my kids,” Klubek said. “The little ones have gone up with their confidence and that’s what I want. It doesn’t matter if your times get better, it matters if your confidence improves like swimming in deeper water. That’s what I want.”

Letter to the editor — July 8, 2014

Dear editor,

Does Kent Thompson really believe we should call him and thank him for voting against the Affordable Care Act and preventing young people, middle class and sick people from getting health coverage?

I don’t think so!

I have two friends in Hutchinson who have Obamacare. One friend’s premium went down $300 a month and he now has way more coverage than he did on his old insurance which is a good thing because he has a pre-existing condition which is very expensive to treat. Obamacare now covers his treatments which will run $150,000 per year plus his prescriptions cost him nothing. He has what is called the platinum coverage.

The other friend’s premium went down $200 per month. He has no medical problems.

I see no reason to thank anyone who voted against Obamacare and as far as the hospitals go, the GOP has done nothing but hurt them by not expanding Medicaid. KanCare sure doesn’t seem to be working, it can’t seem to pay its bills on time which only hurts the hospitals more.

Our so-called GOP governor has just about bankrupted the state and (Secretary of State) Kris Kobach wants to steal everyone’s rights, so I see no reason to thank any Republican politician, especially those who might be working for the Koch Brothers.

Jim Smith,

Iola, Kan.

Mr. Blake preceded her in death April 8, 1972. Evelyn and A. Merle Calhoon were married Feb. 14, 1994. He died May 12, 1997.

Survivors include three children, Penny Lee Kafka, Reisterstown, Md., Harold Lee Blake and wife Jeanie, Ennis, Texas, and Larry G. Blake, Portland, Ore.; two step-children, Larry Calhoon and wife Sheri, Chanute, and Sharon Phillips and husband Bob, Wichita; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
