SALINA — A member of the Council Grove High School basketball team slapped in a layup with three seconds left here to lift Council Grove to a 56-54 victory over Iola High in the third place game of the class 4-A state tournament.

Bryan Lawrence, an Iola eighth-grader and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bret Lawrence, correctly spelled astringent and champagne to win the Allen County spelling bee. Bryan will participate in the state spelling bee on the campus of Washburn University in Topeka.

Howard Ross and Rick Henry are partners in a new Iola business, HR Automotive, which opened last week at 1406 East St. in the Horde building. Ross was associated with Abts Auto Parts here for 13 years.

Terry R. Sparks will open a State Farm Insurance Agency at 108 S. Jefferson. Sparks has been in the insurance business for the past two and a half years in Kansas City Mo., and will be taking over Vern Goodman’s agency.
