Capper Jewelry “has something for everyone,” said Carla Capper.
Having generous lines of merchandise has worked out well. Since the Cappers had an open house on Nov. 19, a steady stream of shoppers has been coming to the shop at 4 N. Washington looking for Christmas and other gifts.
Anything with diamonds, mounted in gold or sterling silver, has been much in demand, Capper added, and “we’re selling a lot of gold for special occasion gifts.”
Among items that have drawn particular attention are reflection beads, put together on bracelets, and alternative metal rings.
Reflection beads are as the name implies, they reflect on an event, birth or something else that reminds of past occurrences.
The alternative metal rings, from Lashbrook, have “really caught on,” Capper said. They come in titanium, Damascus steel, as well as refashioned meteorite, cobalt chrome and with inlaid hardwoods.
“The only drawback is the rings can’t be resized,” Capper said, but if a desired size isn’t in stock, it can be ordered and will arrive in a day or three.
The same is true of crystal and silverware.
“I don’t keep a lot of either in stock, but we can have anything anyone wants in a couple of days,” Capper said.
Included in the silverware offerings are sets for babies, by Reed and Barton, that can be engraved.
“We also sell a lot of watches and we have a full line of Kate McCullar creations, including sterling and diamond hoops, men’s crosses, leather bracelets and diamond bridal jewelry,” Capper observed.

WHILE RETAIL is the shop’s mission, there is much more.
Jewelry repair and remounting are available and “we do appraisals for estates and insurance purposes,” Capper said. “We also buy silver and gold scrap,” with means of giving up to the minute prices for the precious metals.
Ring sizing and gift wrapping are free, sometimes with a little conniving going into some of the gift wrapping.
“If someone wants to surprise we can disguise boxes,” such as hide a ring box in a shoe box, Capper said.
For shoppers who can’t decide on a gift for a loved one, there always are gift certificates.
Arthur and Martha Capper opened the shop in 1964. Brent, their son, and Carla Capper purchased it in 1995, and in 2007 their daughter, Jayme Browning, joined the family business.
The store is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information call 365-5912.
