HUMBOLDT — A dog park is coming to Humboldt.

At their meeting Monday evening, City Council members approved a two-part park — one section for smaller dogs and the other for larger dogs — in the southwest corner of town at the intersection of First and Pine streets.

The city owns the land, which sits directly north of Camp Hunter Park.

The dog park was proposed by Chelsie Tomlinson at Council’s March meeting and was overseen by Council’s parks committee.

Austin Honaker amended his request for the sale of beer on the downtown square for the Humboldt BBQ Cookoff the weekend of Aug. 23, according to Cole Herder, city administrator.

Instead of allowing public consumption and the ability to sell alcohol for the event, Honaker is asking for only those barbecuing the meat be allowed to consume alcohol that they have brought to the event.

Herder said Fred Works, city attorney, could draft such a request.

Not so fast, said Council member Bob Johnson.

Johnson pointed out that proceeds from the cookoff go to support Humboldt schools, “And when I read the responsibilities of its School Resource Officer, the top three pertain to encouraging our children to avoid drugs and alcohol.

“It’s an incongruence to have alcohol at an event that’s meant to raise money for schools,” he said, adding that school-age children will most likely attend the cookoff with their families.

“I will vote no on any such measure,” Johnson said.

Last year, five teams participated in the cookoff, raising $3,000 for Humboldt’s public schools. Honaker is projecting 10 teams for this summer’s competition.

Council members agreed to consider the measure again at their June meeting.

The contract for Humboldt school’s resource office was renewed for next year and included a 2% raise, which is the responsibility of the school district.

Shannon Moore, Humboldt police chief, said the resource officer, Tyrone Wooden, was effective in building a “better image of police officers” among the students and that “Kids come to him with issues.”

When Humboldt’s three water towers are refurbished later on this year, they will be painted white and have “Humboldt” stenciled on in black, Council members decided.
