Iola City Councilman Max Grundy, who has served on the Council for the past 2 ½ years, has resigned his seat.

Grundy had announced previously he and his family are moving to Utah.

Now that their home in Iola has sold, Grundy announced Monday’s Council meeting would be his last.

“I’ve sure appreciated working with everybody here,” Grundy said. “It’s really been an honor to be able to be a part of the Council and to work with the staff. I really enjoyed it.”

He exited by praising the city’s potential, particularly with its present leaders at the helm.

“There’s a lot of possibility here,” he said.

Grundy and his family arrived in Iola in 2022.

As an independent artist, he and wife Candice also purchased the city’s abandoned Elm Street water tower for $1,000, with the thought of converting the structure into an Airbnb complex.

Instead, Grundy said he is putting the tower up for sale.

Mayor Steve French thanked Grundy for his efforts to beautify and further promote Iola.

Grundy painted several downtown murals through an Iola Area Chamber of Commerce project and helped design an official city flag.

French said he has been approached by two Iolans to replace Grundy on the Council. Grundy represented Iola’s Second District, which largely covers the northeast quadrant of town.

French invited anyone interested in filling the remainder of Grundy’s term — the seat is up for re-election in 2027 — to attend the Council’s July 27 meeting to speak with the Council.

Grundy’s replacement will be appointed by the mayor, and then ratified by the other seven Council members.
