KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Elijah Ming, 34, a deputy with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Dept., was shot and killed Friday as he and another officer responded to a domestic disturbance in Kansas City.
Arrested in connection with the shooting was 38-year-old Shawn M. Harris, who faces charges of capital murder of a law enforcement officer. Harris was taken into custody upon his release from the hospital Saturday morning.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation reported that Ming and a KCK police officer were called to a house in Wyandotte to assist a female subject as she moved out of the apartment, due to concerns about her safety.
According to the KBI, the female subject had asked friends to help her move, but when they arrived, a male subject threatened them with a firearm.
When Ming and the other officer approached the front door, the male subject inside the home fired multiple shots, striking Ming. The other officer was uninjured.
As responding officers attempted to provide aid to the stricken officer, gunfire was exchanged once again, according to the KBI. Officers returned fire, striking the man, later identified as Harris.
Ming was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police negotiated with Harris over the phone until he surrendered just after 5 p.m. Friday. He was transported to an area hospital, where he stayed until being released Saturday morning and taken to the Johnson County Jail to await formal charges.
