The adage “every vote counts” was never more evident Tuesday than in Humboldt.
Challenger Richard Weilert defeated incumbent Vada Aikins by a single vote, 110 to 109, in their city council race.
The winner, however, will not be declared before Friday, when county commissioners canvass the votes and consider five provisional ballots cast in the Humboldt election.
A provisional ballot is one cast by a voter whose name was not on the registration rolls at his respective polling site. Commissioners must decide whether any of the six provisional votes are valid, and if so, whether it affects the Aikins-Weilert race for the city’s Ward 2, Position 1.
Sunny Shreeve won Humboldt’s other contested council seat for Ward 2, Position 2. Shreeve received 98 votes, defeating Brenda Clark, who received 62 votes, and Joe Weiner, who received 61.
Seventy-four write-in votes will be counted for the Humboldt council seat held by Sean McReynolds. McReynolds declined to file for re-election and nobody else filed for the seat, leaving it vacant. The names of the candidates receiving write-in votes were not available.
The other contested city council race was in LaHarpe, where Savannah Flory was the top vote-getter in a six-man race with 33 votes received, followed by Ella Mae Crowell with 22 votes. Those two will earn council seats, while the third-place vote-getter, Don Gay (20 votes) may be appointed to fill a third seat vacated by Gerald Clay, who gave up his seat earlier this year.
Others receiving votes in LaHarpe were Randy Crowell, 16 votes, Clayton Carr, 13, and Ruth Jackson, 12.
