John W. Lust, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, in Iola.
Mr. Lust was born near LaHarpe on Nov. 23, 1923. He grew up on the farm his grandfather homesteaded in the 1800s. John graduated from LaHarpe High School and Iola Junior College. He joined the Army in 1942 and served with the 87th Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. During his military service he received three Theater medals, one Occupation medal and the Combat Infantry Badge.
John married Joyce D. Nicholas in 1944. Together they built Lar-Le Farms, renowned for Brown Swiss cattle. They bred several grand champions, in addition to Lar-Le’s Stretch Titan, a Brown Swiss bull whose fame reached as far as Switzerland. Joyce preceded him in death in 1977.
Mr. Lust is survived by his five children: Leona (Ed) Beezley, Golden, Mo., retired Maj. Gen. Larry (Cathy) Lust, Lenexa, David (Cathy) Lust, Denver, Colo., Denis (Sirena) Lust, Humboldt, and Terry (Sherry) Lust, Omaha, Neb.; 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Ruth, his third wife, Betty, and grandson, Michael Beaman.
Cremation has taken place and a private burial will take place in Moran. Memorials are suggested to Wounded Warriors Project and may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola, which assisted the family.
