Lena C. Thummel, age 88, of Iola, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018, at Greystone Residential Care, Iola. She was born Nov. 23, 1929, in Plainville, the daughter of Luke and Anna Elizabeth (Eilers) Schulte. Lena graduated from Plainville High School in 1947. She worked for a dentists office in Plainville. Lena married Leo Thummel on June 29, 1950, in Plainville. This union was blessed with four children. They made their home in Iola, where she provided daycare for children in her home for 31 years. She enjoyed ceramics, painting and stitching. Lena was a member of St. Johns Catholic Church, Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary, and Red Cross Volunteer at the Allen County Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luke and Anna Schulte; husband, Leo Thummel, on Nov. 2, 2013; two brothers, one sister, and a great-grandson. Lena is survived by two sons, Rodger Thummel, Jerry Thummel and wife, Sharon, all of Iola; two daughters, Ronda Barnow and husband, Doug, Chanute; Janet Wilson and husband, Robert, Iola; 15 grandchildren; 17 greatgrandchildren and one to be coming in May; and two great-great-grandchildren and one to be coming in October, and many, many daycare kids she thought of as her own. A visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m., today at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Iola. Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., Friday at St. Johns Catholic Church, Iola. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, Iola.
