Virgil H. Roberts, 86, of Iola died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at Allen County Hospital in Iola.
He was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Baldwin, the son of John Orson and Alma (Palmer) Roberts. He grew up in Garnett, where he graduated from high school.
On Sept. 18, 1948, he married Jean Stanley in Bentonville, Ark. They made their home in a number of communities following his sales career. They settled in Iola in 1955. He retired as sales manager for Capper’s Insurance in Topeka about 20 years ago.
Roberts loved fishing, hunting, playing cards and gardening.
He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola and Masonic Lodge No. 38.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean, of the home; three
children, Vickie Tholen and husband Jim of Iola, Ron Roberts of Gardner, and Linda Duvall and husband, Randy, of Pomona; nine grand-
children, Christine, Tammy, Lisa, Kimberly, Zachary, Jeremey, Seth,
Jessica and Bret; and nine great-grandchildren, Chloe, Emma, Grace, Travis, Madeleine, Joshua, Makayla, Eli and Austin.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Orson, and by two sisters, Beatrice Suloff and Nina Dixon.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. The Rev. Trudy Kenyon Anderson will officiate.
Visitation is an hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
Memorials to Wesley United Methodist Church or the Iola Senior Center on Jefferson Street may be left with Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
