After starting the season with a quick 2-0 start, Allen Community College’s volleyball team participated in its first tournament of the year over the weekend.
The Red Devils went 1-3 overall during the Northeast CC Tournament in Norfolk, Neb.
In their first game Friday, coach Whitney Shaw and company defeated Lake Region in a three-set sweep to start the weekend strong (25-14, 25-18, 25-19). Although the Red Devils carried momentum into the rest of their matches during the weekend, they couldn’t sustain it against their next three opponents.
Allen fell 3-1 to Southeast CC (16-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-17). Shaw saw her team take the first set but couldn’t keep it up without two of its players, who were out with sickness and injury.
The Red Devils then had to adjust their lineup and play some of their athletes out of their more familiar positions.
On Saturday, Allen took the floor once again, this time against Kirkwood CC. The Red Devils fell in three straight sets (25-17, 26-24, 25-15).
In its final match of the weekend, Allen played host Northeast CC and also lost in three straight sets (25-17, 25-22, 25-18).
The Red Devils continue their season against rival Neosho on Wednesday at home.
