MOUND CITY — The Crest High baseball team jumped all over Jayhawk-Linn in its season opener on Thursday.

The Lancers (2-0) used dominant pitching performances from ace Trevor Church and Stetson Setter to take the pair of victories, 7-0 and 10-0. The duo combined to strike out 25 batters and walk only one.

Game one

Church, who has signed to play college baseball at Fort Scott Community College after the season, showed why he deserves to pitch at the higher level.

Church was electric and allowed only two hits, while striking out 13 Jayhawk-Linn batters through his seven innings.

“Our pitching was spot on and Trevor, Stetson and Avery were very efficient working ahead of hitters,” said Crest head coach Roland Weir. “Jayhawk didn’t have an answer for Trevor or Stetson’s pitching.”

When Setter and Holden Barker got on base in the top of the first, Rogan Weir drove them both home for an early 2-0 lead. Church then got on base on a walk in the third inning and scored on an error to make it a 3-0 advantage.

The Lancers brought three more runs to the plate in the top of the fifth inning in Church, Jack White and Setter for the 6-0 lead.

Ryan Golden then scored in the sixth inning following a leadoff double. He came around to score on an error for the final tally.

Weir led at the plate, driving in three runs and smacking two hits. Setter and Barker also each drove in one run while the Lancers had seven hits total and two walks.

Game two

Setter started on the hill in the second game and shut out Jayhawk-Linn through six innings while only allowing one hit and striking out 12 batters.

Setter also got Crest on the scoreboard in the third inning when he was hit by a pitch and scored on a Barker RBI triple to deep left field. Barker, Weir, Blaufuss and Golden then scored four straight runs for Crest to take a 5-0 lead in the third.

Barker and Blaufuss each drove in two runs while Church and White, Barker, R. Weir and Drake Weir each had two hits.

Blaufuss came on to close the game out on the mound and didn’t allow any hits or runs while striking out one in the final inning.

Crest’s road game against Chetopa next Monday has been canceled and the team is currently trying to find an alternate opponent.
