Both Humboldt teams opened up league play with a loss Friday night when they traveled to Erie to face the Red Devils. The boys lost 60-57 while the girls fell 44-32.
This marks the second loss of the season for both Cub teams versus Erie.
The Lady Cubs fell behind 9-4 after the first quarter and 8, 18-10, at the half. They cut it down to just seven after the third quarter but a 13-8 fourth quarter secured Humboldt’s loss.
The Humboldt girls are now 9-4 and 0-1 in Tri-Valley play.
The Cubs JV also lost, 24-43.
The Humboldt boys kept it closer.
They trailed 26-22 early after the first quarter but a 12-5 second quarter gave the Cubs a 34-31 lead at the half. Erie cut the lead to one headed into the fourth and Humboldt did their best to hang on to the lead but the Red Devils edged them out with a 13-9 fourth quarter.
“I liked our effort tonight,” head coach Dave Taylor said. “But sometimes it just comes down who does or doesn’t make a mistake late. If you make the plays you get the win and tonight we just didn’t do that.”
Sophomore Conor Haviland and senior Hesston Murrow both had 13 points and Wyatt Seufert had 10 points.
The Humboldt boys are now 9-4 after the loss and 0-1 in league play.
The junior varsity boys won 61-56 and the C-Team won 41-31.
The Cubs will travel to Eureka on Tuesday.
