Cubs, Lady Cubs improve during Bluestem Jamboree

Multiple Humboldt Cubs and Lady Cubs finished Tuesday's jamboree with a few wins while competing in Leon.

The Humboldt Cubs and Lady Cubs picked up a few wins while competing at the Bluestem Jamboree Thursday.

In boys action, junior 157 lbs. Broc Ivy took second after opening with a loss to 24-7 Belleville junior Kolby Strand but rebounded with a second period pin of Augusta junior Max Payne. After opening with a loss to eventual tournament champion Colton Pratt of Andover by 13-4 decision, Humboldt junior 144 lbs. Emmitt Carson rebounded to take second place with a first-period pin of Garden Plains junior Trevor Catlin, then a first-period pin McPherson junior Trevor Ferguson.

 At 190 lbs., freshman Bentley Kolb lost all three of his matches by pin, but more than held his own while nearly going three rounds with runner-up Trent Gardner of Garden Plains.

The Lady Cubs also had a strong night Tuesday. Sophomore 125 lbs. Jordan Hency made a strong return to the mat with a first-place finish. She took her opener over McPherson sophomore Ruth Chay by first-period pin then secured gold with a second-period pin of Andover sophomore Angela Pineda.

Junior 155 lbs. Willow LaCrone also took first. She blitzed through the bracket with a trio of first period pins of Andover junior Amaya Hall, Bluestem junior Brecken Tullis and Belleville junior Jacqualyn Parde.

After flirting with the heavyweight class earlier this month, junior 190 lbs. Savannah Koch dropped back down to take second with a win by first period pin of Bluestem sophomore Savannah Marvin. But she fell to Eureka senior Harlie Owings to take second.

Senior 100 lbs. Tori Melendez took second after opening with a first-period pin of Andover freshman Joslyn Shinkle, then fell to Bluestem sophomore Delanie Scott by second-period pin before securing second place with a 13-6 decision over Garden Plains junior Jade Bull.

Junior Hope Thompson picked up a win at 130 lbs. after rebounding from a loss by first period pin to Andover sophomore Riley Coulter with a first-period pin of Pratt freshman Kharise Araneigo. She finished third after falling by a second-period pin to Marion Junior Violett Dawson.

At 140 lbs. freshman Brylee Napier went 0-3 after falling in a trio of pins.

Following Thursday’s home duel, the Cubs and Lady Cubs return to the mat Saturday for the Eureka Invitational.
