These days, it is impossible not to see that the Allen Community College women’s basketball team is making strides, unfortunately on Wednesday night those strides didn’t add up to a win as the Red Devils fell 43-33 to Butler Community College.
While the loss still certainly stings, holding the Grizzlies to just 43 points is a big improvement from November 28, when Butler rolled past Allen 73-37 in El Dorado.
“I thought we defended our you know what off,” Red Devil coach Todd Buchanan said. “I think it is night and day… I have been really proud of them from a basketball I.Q. standpoint. We can throw about six different defenses at people.”
While the improvement is good to see, the offense still hasn’t come around for the Red Devils. On Wednesday, they committed 29 turnovers and only scored 33 points. That combination is not a recipe for success.
“That is the game,” Buchanan said. “You just can’t have 29 turnovers.”
Allen shot only 21 percent in the first half and 26 percent for the game.
Sophomore DaMonica Franklin — one of only two sophomores on the team — led the Red Devils with 12 points while freshman guards Tamera Shaver and Kamri Summons each added seven.
The Red Devils also played on Wednesday without starting forward Akia Andrews — who was coming off her best game of the season in Garden City on Saturday. The freshman is dealing with a concussion.
“We are just a different team with her and obviously I wish we would have had her,” Buchanan said. “We will never know.”
On Saturday, Allen travels to Barton Community College.
