CHANUTE — Kelsey Larson had a golden day for Iola High’s Fillies at the Chanute High’s Thad Clements Invitational track meet Friday.
Larson won the 400-meter dash in 64.4 seconds. She came back on the track and claimed first in the 200-meter dash in 27.9 seconds.
Larson, a sophomore, had combined with Maggie Wilson, Kendra Taiclet and Jazmyne Honeycutt to win the 4×100-meter relay race earlier. The foursome ran the race in 53.9 seconds.
“Kelsey had a super day. Her 200 in the final was not wind-aided. By the evening events, the wind was from the west and they ran the curve into the wind,” said Marvin Smith, Iola High head track coach. “Jazmyne only competed in the relay because she was feeling well following a root canal.”
Iola High athletes set two meet records on a day that was windy and cool. Iola High’s Mustangs finished second to Pittsburg and the Fillies were third in the girls’ division won by Pittsburg.
Pittsburg’s boys won with 111 points followed by the Mustangs with 100 points. Chanute was third with 95 in the nine-school meet.
Pittsburg’s girls piled up 136 points and second-place Chanute had 113. The Fillies edged Labette County with 85 points to 84 points.
The Chanute meet was a good tune-up for Thursday’s  Southeast Kansas League meet here in Iola. All but Columbus competed at Chanute.
“It gave a good preview as to the league meet but a few individuals were not competing (at Chanute),” Smith said.
“We’re so excited about hosting the SEK meet. Our guys are excited after being so close to Pittsburg at Chanute that they will be ready for Thursday’s meet.”
For the Fillies, Wilson broke the Thad Clements Invitational meet mark in the girls’ pole vault. She won the event with a vault of 10 feet, 6 inches. Wilson also took the silver medal in the 100-meter dash in 13.1 seconds.
Kirstin McGuffin threw a personal-best distance of 118’2” to capture gold in the javelin. Mindy Powelson took the bronze medal at 102’10”.
Katlyn Cleaver was the silver medalist for the discus. She had a throw of 107 feet.
Taiclet was 0.05 off the IHS record in the 100-meter high hurdles. She took second in 16.15 seconds. She was sixth in the 300-meter low hurdles in 54.8 seconds.
Taiclet combined with Larson, Chanel Coyne and Wilson to place fourth in the 4×400-meter relay. Their time was 4 minutes, 31.3 seconds.
Ethan Fulton pocketed yet another meet record this season. Ethan won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.4 seconds. That was a Thad Clements Invitational record. Aaron Fulton was third in the race in 15.8 seconds.
Roman Yocham captured the silver medal in the 3200-meter run in 10:48.9. He was third in the 1600-meter run in 5:01.1.
“Every varsity meet has been very windy and we can’t get our best times in the longer races,” Smith said. “We have had some good wind-aided times in the sprints and jumps but we want to see what we can do in the multiple-lap races.”
Darin Hutton was the silver medalist in shot put with a throw of 45’5”. He was third in the discus at 123’8”.
Drew Shepherd took second in the pole vault, clearing 10’6”, and teammate Dylan Lower was fifth at 9 feet. Christian Kauth placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 37’9”.
Seth Browning finished third in the 400-meter dash in 53.6 seconds. Aaron Cheung ran fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:13.4 and Ryan Weir was fifth in 2:13.9.
Weir, Cheung and Kauth combined with Chris Harrington for third place in the 4×800-meter relay race. Their time was 9:12.7.
The Mustangs’ 4×400-meter relay team of Browning, Kauth, Mikal Bossell and Shane Snavely turned in a fourth-place time of 3:43.6. Snavely and Browning combined with Ethan and Aaron Fulton for fourth in the 4×100-meter relay race in 46.2 seconds.
Ethan Fulton grabbed the bronze medal in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 44.6 seconds. He also was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.4 seconds.
