HUMBOLDT — Any notion that the 2021 fall sports season will avoid the pitfalls of the COVID-19 pandemic already have been summarily dismissed.
Humboldt High’s football team learned earlier this week that its upcoming opponent, Leon-Bluestem, would be unable to play Friday’s opener because of a teamwide quarantine.
That left Humboldt officials scrambling to find a replacement.
The Ava Bears of Missouri answered the call, precisely because their scheduled opponents are in quarantine due to a COVID-19 outbreak.
The Bears will travel roughly 200 miles to the Humboldt Sports Complex Friday for the 7 p.m. kickoff.
Ava is about 50 miles southeast of Springfield.
Like Humboldt, Ava found itself without an opponent because the opposing team is under quarantine.
