MOUND CITY — A fourth-quarter lull sank Yates Center High’s hopes of victory Thursday.
The Wildcats trailed host Jayhawk-Linn, 42-40, after three quarters, but scored only three field goals down the stretch in a 57-49 setback.
The loss drops Yates Center’s record to 8-7.
The loss spoiled what had been a dynamite showing from Yates Center’s Ben Cook, who had 20 points by the end of the third quarter.
Cook also connected from downtown once in the fourth quarter — so did teammates Colton Burkholder and Gavin Busteed — but that was it for Yates Center’s offense.
Cook wound up with 23 points, followed by Evan McVey with eight and Busteed with seven.
Clay Nichols scored 19 to pace Jayhawk-Linn.
Yates Center was slated to host Altoona-Midway Frida. Results were unavailable by press time. The Wildcats will host Uniontown Tuesday.
