High School Softball: Lady Rams 8, Lady Cubs 4
CHEROKEE The Humboldt softball team hung up its cleats on Tuesday after an 8-4 loss to two-time defending state champion Riverton in the regional championship.
The road ahead going into the tournament was tough for the Lady Cubs. Not only was Riverton a four-seed, but one-seed Cherokee-Southeast had just one loss before falling to Riverton in the regional semifinal. The second-seeded Cubs were going to run headlong into one of them and it was the Lady Rams who proved to be too much.
Riverton opened things up with a three-run top of the first before Humboldt countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first.
The Lady Cubs tied things up in the bottom of the second and then after two scoreless innings, Riverton had a four-run bottom of the fifth that put the Rams up 7-3.
Each team scored a run in the seventh and Humboldts 20-3 season was over.
Senior Rylan Wilhite took her third loss of the season, allowing eight runs (two earned) on nine hits and three walks. She struck out four and finished the year with a 20-3 record.
Wilhite and Murrow each went 4-4 with Murrow picking up two RBIs.
Earlier that day, the Lady Cubs got a nice 15-0 win over three-seed Northeast-Arma.
Humboldt scored three in the second, eight in the third and four in the fourth to get the four-inning win.
Wilhite allowed just one hit while striking out two.
Winter Snyder recorded three hits and two RBIs and Morgan Mauk and Murrow each had two hits. Mauk had two stolen bases and three RBIs.
The Cubs return a lot heading into the 2019 season, but lose Wilhite to graduation.
