LE ROY — To get another shot at being a “giant-killer,” Southern Coffey County High’s girls’ basketball team had to take one game at a time in this week’s Kansas Class 1A, Division I Substate Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Titans took care of business in an opening-round game Monday at home. Southern Coffey County defeated Crest High’s Lady Lancers 66-23.
That puts the Lady Titans (11-10) in the semifinals of the substate tournament. They take on St. Paul High’s Indians (17-3) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Southern Coffey County High is hosting the substate tournament but not at home in Le Roy. The semifinals and championship games are slotted for Allen County Community College’s gym in Iola, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
In the other first-round game Monday, Pleasanton played Hartford.
Southern Coffey County has a big task in the semifinals. They hope to reach the championship Saturday and a potential rematch with undefeated and top-ranked Olpe.
Olpe rolled over Southern Coffey County Friday 65-21 in a make-up game.
In Monday’s game, the Lady Titans were on a roll of their own, leading 39-6 at halftime. Crest was able to score 17 second-half points but never could get back into the game.
Kristin Stephens fired in 14 points for SCCH followed by Samantha Jacob with 12 points. Martyna Hegwald added 10 points.
Crest was led by Ashley Catt and Erica Holman with six points each.
