HUMBOLDT — Levi McGowen has found the perfect fit, academically and athletically, to continue his schooling.
The Humboldt High senior signed a letter of intent this week to take part in track and field for Butler Community College.
“They have a great accounting program,” McGowen explained, “and the need for triple jumpers.”
The triple jump is McGowen’s specialty. He qualified for the state track meet in that discipline as a junior and is primed for a repeat run again in 2022.
In fact, McGowen set a personal record earlier this week at the Humboldt Invitational by clearing 42 feet, 3 inches. That mark would have earned him a top-five finish at state last year.
McGowen, son of Luke and Kara McGowen, was a multisport standout for the Cubs.
“I was a originally a basketball guy,” he explained.
While McGowen still enjoyed basketball, an assistant track coach urged him to give that sport a try.
He found triple jumping to his liking.
“I do some other things, but triple jump is the main reason I’ll be out there,” he said.
Humboldt will take part in the Class 3A Regionals next Friday at Chanute with the hopes of advancing to state May 27-28 in Wichita.
