Basketball season is underway as the Iola Middle School Mustangs picked up the first win this year among all local programs Wednesday.

The Iola Middle School Mustangs girls basketball set the tone for the rest of their middle school and high school counterparts with a sweep of Thursday’s home opener against Prairie View.

The IMS eighth grade, seventh grade and junior varsity teams kicked off the year with victories, but the eighth-grade Mustangs made the biggest splash while routing the Buffalos by 40 points.

The Mustangs closed out the night with a few fireworks. Elliot Sigg racked up 20 points in a 44-4 victory over the Buffalos. Abby Boeken had a 14-point contribution, followed by Ava Davis and Cayleigh Rutherford with 4 points each.
