WINFIELD — The Iola Mustangs return from the Winfield Tennis Tournament with a few wins while competing against some of the best singles and doubles players across southeast Kansas.
Iola sophomore Mosiah Fawson fell in the semifinals after opening the tournament with two 8-0 wins over Josh Milligan of Haven and then Alan Mah of Independence. Fawson fell to eventual tournament champion Amir Khicha of Wichita Collegiate, 8-4. In the consolation bracket, Fawson worked his way to the seventh-place match with a victory over Reece Knight of El Dorado, 8-5.
In doubles action, seniors Ruger Boren and Brodie Thompson took 17th after opening the tournament with a loss to the Wellington tandem of Easton Lynees and Camden White. The Mustangs rebounded with four consecutive wins, wrapping up the day with an 8-5 victory over Wesley Hays and Jacob Berger.
Iola’s No. 2 doubles team of Logan Belknap and Maddux Franklin didn’t win on the road but came close despite facing stiff regional competition. The Mustangs return to the court for Thursday’s Chanute Invitational. First serve is at 3 p.m.
