MORAN — Marmaton Valley Junior High’s boys’ teams both picked up wins to start their season Thursday, while the girls teams lost their openers.
Ethan Tavarez hit a go-ahead shot for the Wildcat A team with 25 seconds left in a 30-29 win over visiting Northeast (Arma) Junior High.
The B team, meanwhile, broke open a close game in the fourth quarter of a 19-10 win.
“It was a great way to start,” Wildcat head coach Scott Brady said. “The boys played great and fought back from behind in both games. We still have a lot to work on for the rest of the season.”
In A team action, Justice Pugh led the way for Marmaton Valley with 14 points. Trevor Wilson added eight. Tavarez and Jake Kale scored four points apiece.
Trevor Wilson scored all of his game-high eight points after halftime in the B team contest. Marmaton Valley trailed 6-5 at halftime and led 9-8 after three quarters before ending the game with a 10-2 run.
Pugh followed with five points, while Tavarez, Derek Nixon and Kiefer Endicott added two points each.

IN GIRLS’ action, Northeast led the A team contest 20-2 after one quarter in a 38-9 victory. Kyla Drake scored five points to lead Marmaton Valley. Misty Storrer and Nalea Alexander scored two each.
“We knew Northeast was going to be a tough opponent for our first game,” Wildcat girls head coach Kim Ensminger said. “They forced many turnovers. As a result, we couldn’t get into an offensive flow.”
The Wildcat girls B team lost 12-2. Trinitee Gutierrez scored a basket for the Wildcats.
“The B team had many opportunities to score,” Ensminger said. “The ball simply didn’t fall.”
