SEDAN — Yates Center High’s Wildcats led top-ranked Pittsburg St. Mary’s-Colgan High’s Panthers 5-0 to open their Kansas Class 2A Substate Basketball Tournament semifinal game Thursday.
Then reality set in as the Panthers clamped down defensively, disrupting the Wildcats. The Panthers turned the tables, leading 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Colgan went on to win 57-35 to end the Wildcats’ 2010-2011 season. The Panthers advance to the 2A substate final against Sedan, which beat Oswego 65-58 Thursday.
The substate tournament is hosted by Sedan High School. The title game with a Class 2A state tournament berth on the line is 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
“Our kids played hard right to the end. Their full-court pressure didn’t allow us to get into our offensive sets very many times in the game,” said Jason Weilert, YCHS boys’ head coach.
“They did a better job in the physical game.”
Yates Center was down 27-12 at halftime. Colgan outscored the Cats 21-12 in the third quarter.
