Weather can’t slow Iola

Stormy weather forced organizers to halt junior varsity tennis matches in Fort Scott Monday. Two Iola players were hardly disturbed in sweeping their matches when play resumed.

FORT SCOTT — Mother Nature delayed action for Iola High’s tennis team Monday.

But once the weather cleared, Iola’s Miah Shelby and Kiera Fawson provided a little thunder of their own.

Both swept past all three of their opponents as part of Fort Scott’s junior varsity invitational.

Shelby, playing No. 1 singles, surrendered only two points all day in dispatching Fort Scott Madyn Messer (6-0), Pittsburg’s Roary Hunziker (6-0) and Independence’s Marka Roth (6-2).

Fawson, in the No. 2 singles slot, did much the same. She rolled plast Fort Scott’s Karen Primeaux (6-1), Pittsburg’s Laikyn LaFever (6-0) and Kenna Romine of Independence (6-3).

The Mustang No. 1 doubles team of Rebekah Coltrane and Charlie Peters went 0-3. They lost, 6-2, to Fort Scott’s Gracyn Brown and Kinsley Brown; 6-0 to Pittsburg’s Marci Brown and Addy McCabe; and 6-2 to Jade Umlauf and Jordan Wilson of Independence.

“It was a very fun day of tennis,” Mustang head coach Chris Belknap said.

Iola was able to get a few matches in before the lightning delay put a halt to the action.

Once the storm cleared, action resumed, albeit under a light rain.

The players celebrated their on-court success with an ice cream cake at Dairy Queen, Belknap reported.
