Weightlifters show skills in competition

CHERRYVALE — Humboldt High’s nascent weightlifting program yielded some immediate dividends Saturday with the 2016 Tri-Valley Power Lifting Competition.
The Cub boys took home third in their division, behind league powers Cherryvale and Caney Valley, and ahead of Neodesha and Erie.
“I was very happy with how the kids did, especially considering this was the first event that many of them have ever competed in,” head coach Tell Wyrick said.
Leading the way for Humboldt were Anthony Doran, who took second overall at 156 pounds, and Josh Vanatta, who finished second in the 123-pound class.
Doran’s day included taking first place in the squat lift, raising 315 pounds.
Rhett Smith, who finished eighth at 172 pounds, took first in his weight class in the clean and jerk, lifting 235 pounds.
Others competing for the Humboldt boys:
— Corey Whitcomb, fourth overall at 140 pounds.
— Bryce Isaac, Jacob Barker, Jacob Marlow and Teryn Johnson, third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, at 165 pounds.
— Noah Johnson and Cole Murrow, third and seventh, respectively, at 198 pounds.
— Kalob Cleaver, third, and Tyler Korte, seventh, at 220 pounds.
— Andres Melendez, fifth, and Nate Todd, sixth, in the Power Lifting division.

ON THE GIRLS side, Paige and Padyne Durand took fourth and fifth, respectively, at 114 pounds.
Morgan Mauk was third at 132 pounds.
Rylan Wilhite took sixth at 140 pounds.
Sydney Hegwald finished fourth in the Power Lifting division.
