LIFTING OFF: Cub athletes shine in league competition

CHERRYVALE — The Tri-Valley League Powerlifting Meet on Saturday offered a unique opportunity for Humboldt’s winter sports athletes to join forces and compete against their league rivals.
The Cub boys’ and girls’ teams each finished fourth overall.
The boys’ team was able to finish with three top-three individual placers.
At 198 pounds, junior Noah Johnson, a wrestler, was able to lift a team-high 915 total pounds among his lifts and finished third in the league. Cubs’ senior Griffin Voorhies, a basketball team manager, took third at 181 pounds by clearing 690 pounds.
The final third-place individual on the boys’ side was one of the youngest Cubs. Freshman 156-pound competitor Conor Haviland, a basketball player, lifted 570 pounds.
Other than those top-three placers, Humboldt freshman Isiah Coronado, a basketball player, had the highlight of the day on the boys’ side by breaking the Tri-Valley League squat record with a 295 pound lift as a 132 pounder. Coronado finished fifth overall in his weight class.
Humboldt senior Levi Habigar took sixth in his weight class, freshman Cooper Jaro took seventh at 123 pounds and freshman Josh Hull was ninth at 198 pounds to round out the top-10 finishers.
Freshman Taylor Lassman also competed at 198 pounds and finished 13th. Freshman Trenton Ray was 14th at 123 pounds.

GIRLS
The Cubs’ girls’ team sent only five competitors to the meet, but four finished in the top-three individually.
Freshman Winter Snyder lifted the most combined weight for the Cubs with 425 pounds take third in the 148 pound weight class.
Freshman Alayna Johnson finished third at 140 pounds with 385 pounds of total weight.
Sophomore Morgan Mauk was third in the 132 pound class with 410 pounds lifted.
Sophomore Aricah McCall also finished third with 340 pounds lifted in the 123 pound weight class.
Sydney Barker was seventh in her weight class.
