The Hormigas, it turns out, will not be playing ball this summer in Iola.
Or anywhere, it seems, as the team has dissolved. Former Hormigas players have joined other teams in the Pecos League or headed west to Grand Junction, Colo., where the Razorback Suckers were formed this spring as the league’s newest team.
“We appreciate the opportunity we had to host the Hormigas and value the experience they provided for our campus and community,” said ACC Athletic Director Doug Desmarteau in a statement to the Register. “While we are disappointed that we could not come to terms moving forward, we wish the organization the very best in its future endeavors.”
Warning signs appeared last fall, when Hormigas manager Derick Dominguez announced his departure to coach the Roswell Invaders. Pitchers Colin Sepulveda, Jacob Bosse and T.C. Burns joined Dominguez, as well as catcher Anthony Castaneda and outfielder Xander Nabors.
The Hormigas were unique in the Pecos League as they also served as a minor league team for the Bravos De Leon of the Mexican League.
The Iola Hormigas were originally the Kansas City Hormigas, playing at Satchell Paige Stadium. In a press conference at Allen last May, the team announced they would split games between Iola and Kansas City, playing at Allen Community College Monday through Wendesday. Players stayed in the ACC dorms and practiced at Alumni Park when not on the road.
This January, the Hormigas announced the team would permanently relocate to Iola. The disintegration of the team came without any public announcement.
The Hormigas finished the 2025 season 13-24, just missing the postseason. Their final game at Alumni Park ended with a 12-10 victory over the Blackwell Flycatchers following a walk-off home run by outfielder Zachary Trangmar.
“The culture over here, the community here, is phenomenal,” said Trangmar, after the game. “They treated us well. They gave us a place to live and good food over here as well. You can’t ask for more.”
