CHEROKEE — Marmaton Valley High’s boys started both halves on the right track Tuesday. It was the endings that proved to be their downfall. Oswego High outscored the Wildcats 15-4 in the second period and 21-10 in the fourth of a 52-30 win.
The Wildcat girls, meanwhile, struggled from the start in their contest, going scoreless in the first quarter of a 54-21 loss to Frontenac.
The losses came in the opening round for both in the Southeast Lancer Classic, hosted by Southeast High of Cherokee.
The Wildcat boys return to action Thursday to take on host Southeast.
Marmaton Valley’s girls will face Riverton.
The Wildcat boys had troubles running their offense, head coach Denny Lasley said.
“We have got to do a better job than passing the ball around once, then trying to beat somebody off the dribble,” Lasley said.
Oswego’s second quarter pushed the Indians on top 23-10. Marmaton Valley closed to within 11, 31-20, after three quarters before Oswego put the game away in the final eight minutes.
Cole Becker and Dalton Houk both scored eight points to lead Marmaton Valley. Becker also had three steals and three assists. Nathan Smart had seven rebounds.
Lasley credited Smart for his play underneath, as well as that of Derrick Carr, who came off the bench and played well.
Hunter Cline scored 22 and Ryan Shields 13 for Oswego.
IN THE GIRLS’ game, Frontenac led 13-0 after one quarter and 24-7 at the break. The Raiders continued a stifling press into the third quarter, opening a 48-13 lead.
“Turnovers killed us,” Wildcat head coach Kent Houk said. “We only shot the ball twice in the first quarter. The girls are going to have to get used to in-your-face pressure.”
Cheyanne Miller scored 10 points and had two steals. Maggie Meiwes added 10 rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Jamee McEndree also had five rebounds and two blocks and Kailey Boyd had two steals.
Riley McCartney scored 14 points and Bailey Flora had 11 to lead Frontenac.
