Wildcats beat Cubs in finals of tournament

MORAN — The Humboldt Cubs and the Marmaton Valley Wildcats were able to cruise through their respective pools at the Marmaton Valley Junior Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.
Both squads went 4-0.
Marmaton Valley topped Central Heights, Southern Coffey County, Hartford and Northeast Arma to advance to the finals.
Humboldt knocked off Crest, Chetopa, Uniontown and Pleasanton with none of those teams forcing Humboldt to play a third set.
The two teams put their perfect records on the line in the finals and Marmaton Valley was able to take the title at their home tournament with a 15-13, 15-11 straight sets victory.
“The girls came to play today,” Marmaton Valley coach Jaime Stodgell said. “They had a goal and worked as a team to accomplish it. To win a tournament on your home court is sweet.”
Camrie Farran led the Cubs with six kills in the championship match. Emma Johnson had five digs, while Farran was second with three.
Alayna Johnson ran the Cub offense with 13 assists. She also had a team-high three ace serves.
The Wildcats had a very balanced attack for the entire tournament with Emily Smart recording 21 kills and Rachel Shaffer right on her heels with 20 kills. Bailey Griffith and Kari Shadden finished with 14 and 10 respectively,
Crest finished the tournament with a 0-4 record and Southern Coffey County went 2-2.
