ST. PAUL — A funny thing happened on the way to the victory column.
Marmaton Valley Junior High’s football team was primed for victory Thursday, steamrolling its way to a 30-6 lead over host St. Paul by the mid-point of the second quarter.
But the Wildcats, who had earlier utilized a successful onside kick and an interception to jump ahead, could not maintain that momentum.
St. Paul scored, then ended a Wildcat drive before halftime, and then scored again.
“They got the momentum that we never got back,” Wildcat head coach Dan Uhlrich said.
The Indians pulled away after the break to seal a 56-38 win.
“St. Paul is a good ballclub and is well coached,” Uhlrich said. “They were physical and hats off to them. I thought offensively we played really well early.”
We have plenty to work on,” Uhlrich concluded. “We have improved so much over the course of the season.”
Marmaton Valley hosts Northeast-Arma next Thursday to conclude its 2025 season.
