LAWRENCE — Iola High senior Maggie Wilson competed in the high school girls’ pole vault Friday at the 2011 Kansas Relays.
Wilson cleared 10 feet, 4 inches and placed seventh.
“That was quite an accomplishment given the weather conditions,” said Marvin Smith, IHS head track coach. “It was raining during warm ups and Maggie had an hour and 10 minute wait since she passed at the first two heights.”
Smith said the wind was behind the competitors for warm ups and Wilson’s first vault at 10 feet. But then the wind switched to a headwind from the north, and the temperature dropped.
Wilson has a new, bigger pole to compete with but has had trouble adapting to it, Smith said.
“She had hoped to try it at Fredonia on Thursday before KU but the weather was crummy,” Smith said. “She was having trouble keeping the pole dry at both meets.”
