BURLINGTON — Yates Center High junior Brae Adams is a three-time Tri-Valley League track champion.
Adams used a season’s-best throw of 117 feet, 3 inches to win the discus at the 2010 Tri-Valley League track meet Thursday at Burlington. Adams has won the event three straight years.
Dylan Sicka, a senior, won back-to-back league championships in two distance races. He won the 1600-meter run in 4 minutes, 42.6 seconds and garnered the gold in the 800-meter run in 2:04.5.
Senior Donnie Bennett became a two-time champion in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 41.2 seconds. He was second in the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.9 seconds after taking first a year ago.
No worries, Bennett had wrapped up another TVL championship earlier in the day. He won the long jump with a leap of 20’2”.
“Weather-wise, it turned out to be a beautiful day. Donnie, Dylan and Brae took full advantage of the conditions becoming TVL champs,” said Dan Berg, Wildcat head coach.
“We had a great meet all the way around. Cherokee (Shaffer) came close to a championship getting second in the high jump after a missed jump in the competition.”
Shaffer went 4’8” for second in the high jump. Yates Center’s Paige Steinforth tied for third at 4’6” but did not get the bronze medal, losing a coin toss.
Steinforth took second in the 400-meter dash in 65 seconds. Haley Bedell was fifth in the 300-meter low hurdles in 57.2 seconds and Shaffer was sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:49.
Steinforth, Shaffer, Sami Hatch and Bedell combined for a fifth-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay race. They had a time of 58.15 seconds.
Bennett finished fourth in the boys’ high jump at 5’6”. Sam Aguirre was fifth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 18.8 seconds.
Berg said the Yates Center High athletes had strong performances with several personal bests that didn’t quite get into the scoring places in events.
“We’re looking forward to regionals at Madison next week to see how many people we can take to state,” Berg said. “It has been great working with these kids this year.”
Humboldt High’s track teams also competed in the TVL meet. Results were not reported to the Register by press time.
