Frank Martin quote correction
The Register reporter misspelled a word in a quote from Kansas State University head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin in Thursday’s article of his talk with Iola High and Iola Middle schools students and USD 257 teachers.
The quote should have said, “Kids are kids and we have to expect (not except) more from them than we do.”
The Register regrets the error.
Red Devils lose
Allen County Community College’s Tommy Hoppough (3) goes after the soccer ball against an opponent in a home game earlier this season. The ACCC men lost 2-0 Thursday against host Kansas City, Kan., Community College. Aurelio Rameres was in goal for the Red Devils and made six saves. Allen County’s men and women host Pratt Community College today in games at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock on the ACCC field.
Hughes storms out of pack to win USMTS race
HUMBOLDT — Jason Hughes started deep in the pack of the USMTS Modified “A” feature race Thursday at Humboldt Speedway. It didn’t stop Hughes from driving past car after car until he had the lead.
Three-quarters of the way through the 40-lap race, Hughes was out in front and no one was going to catch him. Kelly Shryock finished second, followed by current USMTS points-leader Ryan Gustin.
Jeremy Payne ran fourth. Dereck Rameriez rounded out the top five. Thursday’s races were a makeup from an rainout of the USMTS Modified series.
Humboldt Speedway’s three other divisions also raced Thursday.
Derek Michael made it three in a row in pure stock feature action. He tracked down runner-up Levi Phillips for the win. Season points champion Jeremy Willared was third followed by Mike Aiello in fourth and George Reimer in fifth.
A field of 21 B-mods was no challenge for Riley Whitworth, who bettered all comers in the feature race. Jeremy Chambers ran strong and finished second, with Ron Bolin Jr. third. Mike Striegel was fourth, Jimmie Davis fifth.
As usual, 2011 point champ Jeremy Wilson was on track in winning the factory stock feature race. His brother, Derrek, took second, ahead of Patrick Kay, Brandon Weide and Clint Drake.
Next up at the speedway is The McCarthy Auto Group “Prelude to the King of America” on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. The two-night event features all classes competing for a bonus payoff, including $3,000-to-win in modifieds.

Eagles bounce the Lancers
COLONY — The Crest High Lancers football team fell to 1-2 on the season Friday night at the hands of the Lawrence Veritas Eagles 60-14.
“When you play the game of football, you have to play with some emotion,” said Brent Smith, Lancer head coach. “I thought we were pretty flat tonight.”
The Eagles scored 28 points before the Lancers were able to muster the first of two touchdowns. The first Crest score came off a 26-yard pass from quarterback Kyle Hammond to Jordan Morton with 6:35 remaining in the second quarter.
The Eagles put another 18 points on the board before Hammond ran a 45-yard burst into the end zone, making the score 46-12. Hammond added two more points with a successful conversion run.
Leading the Lancers’ defense were Hammond, 11 tackles, and Morton, who had 2 tackles and as many interceptions.
“We have to go back to practice Monday and work on doing our jobs all the time. We have to learn to be physical and play the game of football. It’s a fun game if we do it right.”
Next week Crest will host the Madison High Bulldogs.

To the Forum:
As a city commissioner, I had nine years’ experience working with Judy Brigham. I echo John McRae’s statement that she “never intentionally misled” me. She was always willing to address different points of view on different topics.
She was also a great help with the river bridge project of cleaning up Iola’s dam site.
I count Judy as a good city administrator and a friend.

Weekend starts with a crunch
The car accident that sent a 16-year-old Neosho Falls girl to the hospital Friday afternoon was a family affair.
Olivia McCullough, a Crest High School junior, was traveling westbound on West Virginia Road, just west of Old U.S. Highway 169, when she lost control of her 1996 Chevy Lumina.
McCullough’s brother, Shawn McCullough, 24, was a passenger in a Chevy pickup that was traveling east bound on West Virginia Road.
Shawn McCullough said before the two vehicles passed each other his sister lost control of the vehicle before rolling twice.
The driver of the pickup swerved to the right to avoid a collision. The Lumina came to rest on its wheels in the north ditch.
Speed and loose gravel contributed to the wreck.
“The only thing I could think was I didn’t want anything bad to happen,” Shawn McCullough said, referring to what crossed his mind when he saw his sister’s vehicle go out of control. “She’s my only sister.”
Olivia McCullough, who wasn’t wearing her seatbelt, was taken to Allen County Hospital in an ambulance with a head injury, which her brother said wasn’t serious.
Possible benefits in being Superfund site
In the search to find a good location for a new Allen County Hospital, trustees learned a valuable lesson. What goes around, comes around. And some mistakes have greater consequences than others.
Hospital trustees thought East Street could be a workable site — with a little elbow grease.
Instead, the most ideal spot on the site turned out to be a disaster because of years of misuse by former zinc smelter operators in the early 1900s. Samplings of the soil revealed all kinds of contaminants, an unstable core because of it also being used as a former dump, and intermittent seepage that caused further concern.
THE NEWS that Iola likely will be designated as a Superfund site — among the nation’s worst for toxic waste — again hearkens to actions of more than 100 years ago.
Hundreds more inspections will be necessary than those conducted in 2006. The threshold for contaminants will be lower, meaning more homes and lives will be disrupted.
On the bright side, the designation could mean a tidy sum of federal funds coming our way to carry out the extensive work. Hopefully, merchants and retailers will benefit.
But, oh my, that’s the slimmest of silver linings in the designation.
Think Love Canal, where buried toxic waste and later a dump site caused a public health emergency where citizens developed mysterious illnesses, women suffered a high rate of miscarriages and children were born with birth defects.
An extreme case, for sure, but real, nonetheless, and one that tainted the New York community for the next 25 years.
THE BEST-CASE scenario is for Iolans to comply with the EPA rules so we can get this public relations disaster behind us as quickly as possible.
And though the remediation is to be for residences only, perhaps we can sweet talk the professionals into cleaning up the East Street parcels so some day they can be a safe and attractive entrance to town.
Now that would be turning lemons into lemonade.
