A stroll around the Iola square just got a lot more fun for families and young readers, thanks to a creative initiative by the Friends of the Iola Public Library.

Once again, book enthusiasts can enjoy an outdoor reading experience with the launch of a Story Walk featuring the children’s book “Beetle Bop” by Denise Fleming.

The project turns a walk into a reading adventure. Pages from the book have been enlarged and placed in the windows of downtown businesses, allowing families to read the story one stop at a time as they circle the square.

The Story Walk kicks off at the Iola Public Library, where the first pages are displayed in the window outside the children’s area. From there, readers follow the route to Community National Bank and continue around the square — east, north, west, and finally south — concluding at Iola Pharmacy.

This engaging literacy activity is the first of three Story Walks planned for the summer and is made possible through the efforts of the Friends of the Library in collaboration with local businesses. Materials were generously provided by Beth Toland, early education instructor at Allen Community College.

Participating businesses showcasing pages from the featured book include the Iola Public Library, Community National Bank, Thrive Allen County, Duane’s Flowers, Pregnancy & Family Resource Center, Flynn’s Appliance, Manbeck Law, Jarred, Gilmore & Phillips PA, Decorator Supply, Capper’s Jewelry, Mirror Image Salon, Revival, Ellé Nails, and Iola Pharmacy.

Once readers complete the walk, they are encouraged to return to the library to see if they’re eligible for a prize. A QR code posted at the library will also link participants to a brief survey where they can share their thoughts on the experience.

The Story Walk program was originally developed to promote literacy and healthy living, bringing stories to life in a community-centered setting.
