A torrential downpour that dumped more than an inch of rain in Iola early Sunday nearly proved fatal for an area teen.

Spencer Ames, 17, rural Iola, was traveling along South Dakota Road, about a mile west of U.S. 169, when he attempted to cross a low-water bridge where the road crosses Deer Creek.

The rushing waters quickly swept his vehicle, a 2016 Nissan Altima, off of the roadside.

Ames called 911, and was coaxed by a dispatcher out of the vehicle as the Iola Fire Department’s swift water rescue unit was dispatched.

Ames made it to shore at about time emergency responders arrived. The vehicle was nearly fully submerged by then.

Ames was not hurt.
