Betty Darlene Masters, 87, Chanute, passed away on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, at Heritage Health Care in Chanute.

Betty Darlene (Barber) Masters was born April 23, 1930, to Julia (Hodgson) Barber and Glen Barber in Americus. She loved growing up in the Flint Hills around Eskridge, where she spent most of her young life. She attended grade school at Chalk, Kan., and then high school at Eskridge.

On Oct. 15, 1945, Betty was united in marriage in Emporia, to Dean Masters of Burlingame. Their union was blessed with eight children. While Dean served in the Air Force they lived in several places including, Cheyenne, Wyo., Shreveport, La., Waukomis, Okla., and Portsmouth, N.H. They spent the last 45 years living in Savonburg, Hepler, Stark and Moran. Betty’s purpose in life was being a loving wife and a stay at home, loving mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Dean Masters on Dec. 9, 2008; her parents; two grandsons, Troy Masters and Jacob Masters; two sons-in-law, Lester Herrick and John Starliper; two sisters, Nina Roberts and Dolores DeWitt; and brother, Bob Barber.

Betty is survived by her three sons, Thomas Masters and wife Gina, Mayetta, Dean Masters Jr. and wife Mary, Independence, and Tony Masters and wife Alicia, Chanute; five daughters, Linda Herrick, Eskridge, Kathy Cox and husband Jim, Chanute, Nancy Starliper, Savonburg, Debbie George, Eskridge, and Diane Meeds and husband Gayle, Rogers, Ark.; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Wilma Barber, Overbrook.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Moran. Burial will follow in Moran Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and left in care of the funeral home.
