FRONTENAC — The Humboldt Cubs hope to build a bit of momentum in their final two doubleheaders of the season next week after falling to the Frontenac Raiders 10-1 while on the road Thursday.
“We did a lot of good things both offensively and defensively against a really tough team,” Humboldt coach Mason Miller said.
“Both of our pitchers threw well enough to keep us in the game. Ultimately, we didn’t make enough plays and didn’t come through enough at the plate with runners in scoring position to make it a game.”
Eight unanswered runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings by the Raiders, eighth-ranked team in 3A, dropped Humboldt with freshman starter Mason Miller taking the loss despite posting a trio of strikeouts. A fourth inning RBI single by junior outfielder Luke Coronado accounted for Humboldt’s only run of the evening as their record dropped to 11-9 overall.
Sophomore designated hitter Kolton Hanson tied Coronado for the lead in hits with two each. Coronado came in to relieve Miller in the fourth inning, allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks.
The Cubs look to stay above .500 before the regional tournament when they head on the road Tuesday to face Osage City, then remain on the road for another non-league opponent in Osawatomie Thursday.
First pitch for both doubleheaders is 4:30 p.m. for the openers and 6 p.m. for the nightcaps.
