The Humboldt High Lady Cubs made a bit of history while splitting Monday’s triangular with Oswego and Neodesha.
During the contests, school officials recognized senior libero Skylar Hottenstein and senior outside hitter Ricklyn Hillmon after Hottenstein registered her 200th career ace while Hillmon downed her 500th career kill.
“We played hard today. We battled some sickness and worked hard on Saturday with no rest, except for Sunday,” Humboldt coach Terry Meadows said. “Tonight was just a regular game, but the next time we play them will be for league and we’ll be ready.”
As for Monday’s action, the Lady Cubs cruised to a 2-0 victory over Oswego. Following the opening match, Humboldt wrapped up the evening with a 2-0 loss to Neodesha. Although ending the night with a split, Coach Meadows liked how the girls played against the Neodesha Bluestreaks, who came into the contest ranked fifth in 3A volleyball according to the most recent Kansas Volleyball Coaches Association poll.
“We played really well together, and we worked hard,” Hottenstein said. “We lost about four players but the younger ones really picked it up and stepped up to help us.”
Hottenstein did not let the loss spoil her historic night. While pleased with receiving recognition for reaching the 200-ace milestone she did not hesitate in saying how much she would like another round against the Bluestreaks and hopefully another outcome.
“I didn’t know how close I was, but I’m glad I did it,” Hottenstein said. “I play on a club team, and the coaches helped me as well. My teammates encouraged me while I was struggling.”
Hottenstein hopes to get a win over the Bluestreaks the next time they meet.
“I’m excited to see Neodesha again. They are tough competition and fun to play,” Hottenstein said.
Hillmon is also hoping for another chance at the Bluestreaks but she, too, did not let the loss spoil her night.
While serving up aces takes nerves of steel, Hillmon had a few people to thank for serving up well-placed balls for her to spike and having the support of her teammates during some tough times.
“My sister told me I was close. I was really excited,” Hillmon said. “I fought hard and my team was proud of me. In my sophomore year, Kenisyn Hottenstein really helped me a lot to get to this goal. She and Lakyn Meadows — our setter now. I’m just going to keep getting better every day and enjoy the game of volleyball.”
Laney Hull, Humboldt senior middle blocker, dives for a ball during Monday’s triangular at the Humboldt High School Fieldhouse.
Following Monday’s triangular, the Lady Cubs are 6-3. They return to the hardwood this weekend for the Iola Invitational.
