HUMBOLDT — The Humboldt Middle School Lady Cubs picked up a win while hosting Tri-Valley League foe Eureka Thursday in their first contest back from Christmas break.
The Lady Cubs A-Team started off on the right foot with a 24-19 win over Eureka while the Humboldt B-Team fell 10-8.
“In the A game, we faced a very tough defensive team and didn’t handle their pressure well early on,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller said. “I thought we did a much better job of attacking it as the game went on and drew some fouls. We were able to hit some crucial shots and free throws in the 4th quarter to put them away.”
Hadlee Allen had a team-leading 9 points, followed by Quinn Miller with 6 and Zoey Sanchez and Brooklyn Watson with 4 points each. Sanchez had a team-leading six rebounds, followed by Allen with five. Allen had a team-leading seven steals, followed by Miller with six.
“We’ve had games with the lead in the fourth quarter that we haven’t been able to close out. Our defense down the stretch was really the difference,” Miller said.
The B-Team contest was only two quarters, but Humboldt made the most of their limited action. Zoey Hess had a team-leading 4 points, followed by Lucy Galloway and Azzy Miller with a bucket each. Galloway had a team-leading two rebounds, followed by Hess and Peyton Weilert with one each.
“We were only able to play two quarters of the B team game due to low numbers for Eureka,” Miller said. “We had great effort and execution on both ends. We had a lot of really good looks, but the shots just didn’t fall.”
The Lady Cubs return to the hardwood Monday, when they head on the road for a game against another TRL foe in Bluestem. The games begin at 5 p.m.
