IMS Mustangs split wins with Burlington

The Iola Mustangs may have fallen in their final contest at Burlington, but do not expect them to be down for long with the seventh and eighth-grade Pioneer League tournaments scheduled for Saturday.

The Iola Middle School Mustangs look ahead to the Pioneer League Tournament after wrapping up their regular season by splitting with the Burlington Wildcats.

Still on a hot streak, the IMS Junior Varsity opened the evening’s festivities with a 19-13 win but their seventh grade and eighth-grade varsity counterparts could not keep their momentum with 31-18 and 36-0 losses respectively.

According to a post by IMS athletic director Scott Brady, in the junior varsity contest, Maicy Kimball and Helena Morrison tied for the team lead in scoring with 4 points each, followed by Ember Friend’s lead-shifting 3-pointer. The JV Mustangs end their season with a 9-3 record.

In the seventh-grade contest, Iola jumped out to an early lead but could not keep it as Burlington rallied for the win.

Cayleigh Rutherford had a team-leading 8 points, followed by Elliot Sigg with 6. The seventh-graders end their season with a 9-3 record. They return to the hardwood Saturday for the seventh-grade Pioneer League tournament at Iola High School at 10:15 a.m. Their opponent had not been finalized before press time.

The eighth-grade Mustangs fell 36-0 and end their season with a 1-11 record. They will participate in Saturday’s 9 a.m. game at the eighth-grade Pioneer League tournament in Osawatomie. At press time, their opponent had not been finalized.
