INDEPENDENCE — Iola Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade girls teams took three out of four at Independence Middle School Thursday.
The seventh-grade A and B squads swept their doubleheader, downing Independence 13-10 and 13-4.
The eighth-grade A team lost 39-11, while the B team corralled a 17-14 win.
Iola’s seventh-grade A team defense was stout in both of its games.
Iola limited Independence to two points each in the first, third and fourth quarters and four points in the second period of the A team contest.
Toni Macha led the way with seven points. Sydney Wade added four points and Taylor Stout scored two.
“The girls didn’t have one of their better nights, but they played hard and stayed after it,” head coach Marty Taylor said. “Toni did a nice job on both ends of the floor.”
In the seventh-grade B team contest, Alaynah Donovan scored five points, Brecken Sutherland scored four and Stout and Della Lohman scored two points each for the Ponies.
Independence raced to a 17-4 lead in the eighth-grade A team game and led 23-4 at halftime.
Elise Wolf led Iola with five points, while Taylor Sell, Mikaela Platt and Taylor Heslop scored two points each. Sell also had four rebounds.
“We did some good things in the second half,” Taylor said. “Elise played hard, and Taylor Sell did better down low.”
The eighth-grade B team saw Iola’s Taylor Heslop and Macaiah Larney share team-high scoring honors with six points each.
Wolf added four points and Makayli Cleaver scored a point for Iola.
Iola hosts Anderson County on Monday.
